Creating a Cosy Living Room This Winter
There comes a time of year, in which the weather outside becomes cold and punishing. Nothing feels better than when you get home to a nice, warm, and cosy living room. It is therefore important you make sure your living room is as good as it can get. You don’t have to have a lot of money to this either, as just a few small changes and upgrades will transform your leaving room from an ice cave, into a warm and inviting retreat. In this article we’re going to list a few of the things you can do, to get the most from your living room.
1. Choose the Right Colour Scheme
It sounds pretty simple, but many people don’t actually realise that one of the easiest ways you can make a room feel warmer, is by choosing the correct colours. You can get plenty of warm “neutral” colours, or be more exciting and choose a deep red, or yellow to add a little extra flair. Choosing colours that match your furniture (or vice versa) is very important, because a clash will make your living room feel uncomfortable, and you’ll most likely be living with these colours for a while. Take your time, and don’t rush any decisions.
2. Focus on Textures
A cosy room, doesn’t just look cosy, it feels that way too. Soft, touchable pieces will enhance the feel of your living room. Nothing feels better than a soft rug on bare feet and throws will always make you feel like you can wrap up and snuggle on the sofa. Consider adding pillows too. Not only do they look great, but they make relaxing so much better. If you add these little comfort features to your living room, you’ll find that you’ve quickly created the perfect winter hideaway.
3. Select Exceptional Accent Pieces
The correct accent pieces make a huge difference to the overall effect of a room. Inexpensive items such as candles, and mirrors, as well as other more expensive items like Art, make a room feel alive. Strategically positioning candles in front of your mirror can create a dramatic effect, as well as an inviting feel. Like your furniture, these items should match the colour scheme of your room so that they feel like they are somewhere they belong.
4. Use High-Quality Lighting
You can’t really go wrong using many different types of lighting in your living room, but you can definitely go wrong using too much. Small table lamps are a good choice because they provide enough lighting for many activities (such as reading) while allowing you to turn off the rest of your lights,=. This not only looks cosy, but saves energy, and costs less. Controlling your lighting with a dimmer switch can also allow you to achieve a cosier looking room.
5. Get Control Over Natural Light
Even if you bought the most expensive and brilliant lighting, it would all go to waste if you didn’t properly control the amount of external light coming into your living room. You should invest in good window coverings to match your decor, such as curtains, or blinds. Maybe even both. There are many varieties of both, with the most cosy being curtains, or wooden blinds. Both of these should help you completely block out light from outside sources.
The finished result of making these changes should be the perfect place to go to get away from the frigid temperatures and punishing weather of the winter season. Some people will say, a comforting, cosy living room should have a fireplace. This is not necessarily true. These small touches alone, can make your living room even more warm and inviting and bring your interior design scheme to a whole new level.

Well-Dressed Table
Dressing table well
> Tableware
When guests take their seats should not be faced with a mountain of dishes. We will never put more than three dishes on top of each other, especially if they are flat. For the “presentation” with a single dish is enough, but there is one exception: the bowl, the other that can be placed above the level since the beginning of the meal.
Placed two inches from the edge of the table, all dishes play a role: the presentation plate is used as a base for other dishes and are only removed when the time comes for cheese and coffee, the bowl is used to soups and plain for entrees, finally, we will have the plate for the bread up and left the main course. When put on the table we respect the required distance of thirty inches between courses, so guests do not feel like sardines. Read the rest of this entry »
Tips to Choose A Carpet
When buying a rug, there are several aspects that you should pay attention. Here are some:
Consider the place where the carpet is to be used by asking: Is it a high traffic area? Is in a room of high moisture content?, What kind of activity will have the room?
For living rooms or hallways: it is better to get a high grade carpet and high traffic are those that have less cushioning.
For bedrooms, consider who is in them as children tend to spend more time in their rooms so that adults, if children are playing on the floor, cut pile carpet is better because it feels soft to the touch. Read the rest of this entry »
A Ceiling Fan
Written by Rob Stone
Fans are nothing new. They have been used for many, many years to provide the creation of air-flow during hot weather however it is also possible that they can be utilised to be of use in cold weather as well. Nature tells us and shows us that hot air rises and we are all cognizant of that fact. Logic tells us that during warm weather we need the hotter air to be above us but when it is cold we need the warmer air to surround us at ground level. A ceiling fan will aid us in maintaining that so called comfort zone.
Managing to control the room temperature with air conditioners used to be a luxury but not any more and many of us are turning to ceiling fans. A really good ceiling fane should when properly used and maintained have the capacity for a higher delivery of air with less noise, less wobbling and longer usage. It should alleviate heating and cooling costs in your home. Taking into consideration the amazing increase in utility bills over the past few years this is indeed a good thing. Furthermore to those of us who are concerned about the environment the sensible usage of the ceiling fan can cut down consumption of energy sources which may be a contributory factor to the planets pollution.
It is obviously of vital importance that you purchase the correct size and model of fan for the room in question. This is in order to obtain the best possible benefits couples with the minimum usage of energy. Users sometimes believe that the more blades a ceiling fan has then more air circulation will be presented. Wrong. A ceiling fan with four blades for example will provide the same amount of air as one with three blades.
The most professional results obtainable from a ceiling fan are provided when the height of the plane of rotation of the blades is about 8 feet from the ground and the ceiling itself is 1 foot from the rotation of the blades.
So, the fan is in situ, now how do we go about maintaining comfort and saving our hard earned pennies. Simple guidelines are that in summer set the fan for counter clockwise rotation and this will pull the warmer air into the ceiling of the room and in wintertime set it to clockwise rotation so that the warmer air is pushed from the ceiling area to mingle with the cooler air below.
As with anything of an electrical nature unless you are fully qualified you must consult and secure the expertise of a professional to do the work for you. Do NOT risk life and limb just to save a few pounds.
