Despite an overall fall in crime rates for Ireland in 2011, the incidents of burglary continued to rise. Some of this may be due to a worsening recession, with the ‘have not’s’ deciding that they will take what they can’t afford; or quite simply, it may be that home owners and tenants have become lax with their home security.

It should go without saying, that, especially when you are out, or whilst asleep, all doors and windows should be closed and locked and home security taken seriously. Unfortunately however, we all have our forgetful moments and may neglect to lock a door or close a window. This simple error makes life easy for a prospective burglar, often resulting in a loss of property and cash.

Because of this, it is essential that a home should have contents insurance to cover for all loss through theft. These policies should also cover accidental damage caused by floods, spillage or other accidents. You should always check and make sure that you know what your policy covers before signing.

There are now many good policies available and it pays to look around. Once upon a time, this would have meant phoning round insurance companies to obtain a quote for your contents insurance policy. Thankfully, buying your insurance packages online makes them easy and straightforward to compare. You should take extra care though, not to simply pick the cheapest policy as this may not offer the amount of cover that you expect. Naturally, each policy holder will have different requirements and may have a limit on how much they can afford to pay, but as a burglary or major loss through accident can be a distressing event; it is wise to get the best policy that you can afford, in order to make life a little easier for you, should the worst happen.

You should always, where possible, ensure that you are covered for at least the full value of any loss that you may suffer. Many people make the mistake of factoring in only major items such as TVs, computer equipment and jewellery. Whilst these can make up a large part of a loss, other factors should be taken into consideration. For example, if your clothes are lost or stolen, you will need to buy replacement clothes, and even if yours were not especially expensive, the cost can soon add up. The same applies if your freezer becomes damaged; destroying stock. The cost of the contents of a freezer can be significantly higher than you may think.

So, however secure you feel your home is; it is important to remember that anything can happen, and that many claims are made due to weather conditions such as floods; something that we have little control over.

To prevent extra heartache, make sure that you turn on your computer and have a look online for the best home contents policy for your own circumstances.
