When the winter months hit the energy bill in your home can go through the roof. Keeping the heat inside your house doesn’t have to be a constant battle. Many people don’t know that curtains can easily save you money during the winter. Curtains are made out of heavy fabric that can give your windows and sliding glass doors a thermal barrier. This will trap the heat inside your home so your heater doesn’t have to work so hard. If you are thinking about using your curtains to save money there are a few things that you should know beforehand.

Use a tape measure to measure the windows and doorways where you want to use the curtains. You might need a stepladder to measure the height of the doorways and windows. Get the width and the height of the windows and doorways for when you buy your curtains.

Go to your local fabric store or home improvement shop. These types of stores will have the curtains that you need to save the energy in your home. Look on the back of the packaging for the appropriate measurements that you need. Remember that a window that has fuller drapes will look a lot better than a window with drapes that just fit. If you have any questions, talk to a sales associate and they should be able to get you set up.

Hang the curtain rod on the top of your window or doorway. The curtain rod needs to be level so you might want to use a level to help you. Measure about an inch to the top of the window and mark where you want to install the curtain rod. Mark the spot with a pencil. Go to the other side of the window or doorway and make another spot for the other piece of hardware.

Use a drill to secure the curtain rod hardware to the wall. Use your level to make sure that the hardware is secure. Hold the level against the hardware and look at the bubbles to make sure that your hardware is level. If the hardware is not level you will need to reinstall it. Your curtain rod must be level for the curtains to slide across it properly. Thread your curtains through the curtain rod and then hang the rod from the hardware. Pull the curtains across the rod to block the window. This will keep the heat inside your home from escaping.
